Welcome to 5th Grade Math! Math is the foundation of orders and patterns in the universe, and I am excited about the journey we will take learning and growing in our content knowledge as well as in our minds and habits. Together we will learn and grow and lay a strong foundation for the middle and high school years ahead. Below, I have outlined several policies, expectations and procedures you will need to know to be successful.
The Critical Areas of 5th Grade Math
Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Write and interpret numerical expressions.
Analyze patterns and relationships.
Number and Operations in Base Ten
Understand the place value system.
Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers.
Perform operations with decimals to hundredths.
Number and Operations with Fractions
Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions.
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions.
Measurement and Data
Convert like measurement units within a given measurement system.
Represent and interpret data.
Understand concepts of volume and relate volume to multiplication and to addition.
Geometry
Graph points on the coordinate plane to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
Classify two-dimensional figures into categories based on their properties.
Materials Needed For Class:
- 2 Composition Notebooks, 1 for Homework and 1 for Interactive Notebooks
- Pencils (pens do not have erasers, and I expect you to make mistakes, they are important and how we learn)
- Your textbook or workbook if you need it
Classroom Expectations:
- Participate daily. Participation is key and will take many different forms.
- Ask for help. We all need help, so it is important that you ask me for help if you need it. We will work together to make sure that you find the resources you need to be successful.
- You are responsible for all of your make-up work. If you should miss class for any reason, you need to check the website, the While You Were Away binder or ask me or a friend what you missed. *Completing all assignments is crucial for success in this class.
- Follow classroom rules and procedures at all times.
- Be respectful and kind to others at all times. Being kind is important.
- I love a clean and organized room! So when it is time for you to leave the class, please take all of your belongings and clean up after yourself. This includes straightening the desks.
- You must be ready and prepared for class every day. You are only allowed to go to your lockers in the morning, at lunch, and at the end of the day. Each day, you are responsible for bringing your textbook, notebook, and pencils.
Middle School Behavior Systems:
We have developed a middle school behavior system to be used in each classroom. Students are expected to exemplify leadership throughout the day and make positive choices that will lead them to be successful leaders.
Middle School Expectations:
Be prepared and on time
Come in quietly; get on task
Respect yourself, others, and your environment
Make wise choices with P.R.I.D.E.
Students who do not follow the expectation of Middle School students will have consequences. Consequences are as follows:
1st Check: Verbal warning
2nd Check: Behavior Log
3rd Check: Call/email home
4th Check: Detention and communication w/ parents
Homework:
Completing homework is important for practice, and practice is what makes us stronger mathematicians. Homework will be assigned every day and will be in varied forms. Students will be given two days to complete assignments. This is designed so that if a student needs help they can ask for it and complete it for the next day. Most homework assignments will be electronic in form either using IXL, TenMarks, Mastery Connect or FrontRowEd, but your student will also have some problems to complete on pencil and paper. Time will be provided during class to complete some of the pencil and paper problems. It is important that your child have access to a computer to complete their electronic homework as they develop their ability to apply their learning to other media.
Communication:
Room 208 is an open door classroom. It is best to communicate with me via email at [email protected]. I do check email all the time, even after hours on my phone. I do my best to respond immediately to students requesting help. Please wait if you email me few minutes for a quick response if you are asking for help. If you need me immediately please call the school and they will replay the message to me.
I will also be using Google Classroom to support the instruction in the classroom. You will be able to access Google Classroom through your CPS email and parents can join using the code that will be provided. Google Classroom will include videos, links and details on what needs to be completed. It will be a very important tool.
Last of all there will be a website/blog where all important information and communication will be made available. This will be communicated within the first week of school.
South Loop Grading Scale:
A 100-90%
B 89-80%
C 79-70%
D 69-60%
F 59% and below
Grade Weight Averages:
These four components make up your grade at the end of each quarter. Notice the different weights of each category:

*A weekly participation grade will be given. Students can earn up to 3 points each day (total of 15 per week). A point will be given for each of the following: 1) having all materials 2) participating and not being disruptive 3) completing all notes/class work
Homework Policy:
- Each assignment must be labeled with your first and last name, date, and the period in the upper-right hand corner. Also, the name of the homework assignment must be on top.
- Homework must be easy to read and in good condition (no crumpled up papers with spills).
- Homework will be checked at the beginning of class. If the assignment is not completed at the time it is checked, it will be considered late.
- Late Homework Rule: Any homework assignment that is not completed by the due date will not be accepted for full credit. However, you can turn in an assignment ONE day late for half credit. After one day, it will not be accepted.
- Homework is graded on effort/completion. This does NOT mean that I will not be checking homework! We will discuss this in class.
If you are absent, you must come see me before or after school to discuss what assignments you must make up and what notes you need to take. THIS IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY. You will have the amount of days you were absent to make up the assignment to receive full credit.
Reminder:
Once in class, students will only be allowed to leave in the case of emergency or other extenuating circumstances. All bathroom use, getting classroom materials, etc. must be done before school, during lunch/recess, or after school.

- Gives all students an opportunity to shine—to become leaders.
- Helps infuse the language of the 7 Habits into the entire curriculum.
Leader of the Month (LoM):
Leaders of the Month are those students that are exemplars of the 7 Habits and Leader in Me program. Students in each class help the teacher to pick the LoM by nominating those students in their homeroom that displayed leadership according to the 7 Habits. LoMs will be picked at the beginning of the last week of the month and given a special seat at the “Golden Table” and provided a special lunch. LoMs are also allowed to come to school out of uniform.
